THE area's Indian community will celebrate early next month with a festival steeped in tradition.

Through the annual Navarathri and Vijayadasami Festival the community elders aim to pass on their Hindu cultural values and traditions to their children.

The festival will start with a cultural program hosted by children, from 6pm on October 10 at Crestwood High School, Baulkham Hills.

Event spokeswoman Akila Ramarathiam said a statue of Lord Venkateswara from the Venkateswara Hindu Temple in Wollongong would be brought to the festival.

She said that children would express their Hindu culture and traditional beliefs through music, dance and the chanting of prayers.

``The priest will also bring the Moorthy [statues] to the stage where the children are performing,'' she said. ``He will recite a special Puja [prayer] before encouraging the children to do the same.

``There will be chanting of Veda Chanting by Sydney Veda Patasala students, music and traditional dance performance by others and a talk.''
