Police in Fiji are investigating the fourth arson attack on a Hindu Temple in a fortnight.

Our Pacific correspondent, Campbell Cooney, reports the latest attack near Nadi has destroyed one of the country's oldest religious shrines.

Built nearly 100 years ago by indentured labour from India the Shiu Hindu Temple was one of the last remaining shrines in Fiji from that era.

The organisation representing most of Fiji's Hindu's, the Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha Fiji, says police have confirmed the fire was deliberately lit, the fourth arson attack on a Hindu temple in a fortnight.

Organisation National Secretary Vijendrah Prakash, says they can't understand why the Hindu community seems to be a target.

"We have done our best to assist this nation in every possible way," he said.

"This is the question our community is asking now."

Police have not commented on if the attacks are linked to anti Indo Fijian feelings in Fiji, or if the attacks are linked.
