Work under way on £2m temple in Wellingborough

A new £2m Hindu temple could be opened within 12 months.
Work has already started on the impressive domed building in the heart of Wellingborough, which will serve followers of the Swaminarayan sect of Hinduism.

Community leaders believe the temple in Mill Road will allow volunteers to serve a growing community as 12,800 new homes are built in the town under the Core Spatial Strategy.

Eager to see how the new temple will benefit everyone, councillors could travel to the Neasden Temple in London to see how a similar building in Wellingborough might operate.

Castle ward member Shashi Dholakia, who has helped arrange a potential visit for later this year, said: "This is really bringing about community cohesion on a much larger scale.

"Wellingborough is expanding and this will be a focal point, being situated in a central part of the town. It will be really important once it's built."

Vice-chairman of Wellingborough Council's community committee Bob Patel said: "It is going to be just right for Wellingborough and wider Northamptonshire. People will be coming from as far as Daventry, Coventry and Northampton."

The old, house-based Hindu temple in Wellingborough has already been knocked down to make way for the more traditional structure.

After a planning application was approved last year work has started on constructing the outside shell of the temple, which will be made of marble imported from India.

The outside is set to be completed in six months' time and it is estimated that the inside of the building, which will contain prayer areas and rooms for community activities, will take another six months to complete.

The £2m building is being funded by the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir central organisation in London.

Community leaders are keen to stress it will not just benefit Hindus.

Cllr Patel said: "As far as the community is concerned fundraising and activities will be done for lots of different people."

It is hoped that a visit to the Neasden Temple will give councillors a better understanding of Hindu culture, which is a major influence in Wellingborough because of a high Hindu population.

A report for today's community committee meeting at Wellingborough Council said: "The trip is about strengthening understanding of the temple project."

Earlier this year the council was criticised by the Audit Commission for its poor understanding of diversity issues.

A Roman Catholic is a Hindu priest in Jammu
From ANI

Jammu, June 27: A Roman Catholic, who visited India as a young boy for holidaying got so charmed to the people and their lifestyle in India that he decided to spend rest of his life and became a priest.

It's been about 25 years when Giorgio first visited the Tamil Nadu State from Toreno in Italy as a 14-year-old.

Giorgio has been drawn to Hindu philosophy. Despite being a Roman Catholic, considered to be conservative in their way of life, Giorgio has almost become a Hindu, as today he conducts prayers rituals at a local Shiva Temple in Chenai Tehseel in Udhampur district on Jammu-Kashmir highway.

He says that he was fascinated to Indian culture, sufism and saints and this made him decide never to return to his native land and instead settle here.

"I was a Catholic by birth. People follow Christianity in my country. I used to go to church. I was in father's service and we used to have knowledge discourses. I always used to ask Him how to attain proximity with the God and how He looks like. The father used to get amazed on my questions. I was five to seven years old at that time...I used to hear voice of prophecies that one day I will go far from here," said Giorgio Saccheggiani.

Giorgion devoted himself to social work and over the years the local residents started calling Giorgio as "Italy Nath" (a God from the land of Italy).

In 1980, Giorgio arrived in Jammu city in north India from Tamil Nadu that is south India and decided to live a priest' life and seek enlightenment.

Having settled down in Jammu, he learnt meditation and also devoted himself to the social service. His social service earned him immense goodwill among local residents.

Over the last 25 years, he has influenced a lot of people here and the local residents respect him as "Italy Nath".

Giorgio narratess how during childhood he used to have dreams about the ancient structures of India just like he saw initially in Chennai, the State capital of Tamil Nadu and also about the cave shrine of Amarnath in Kashmir.

It was a coincidence that he first landed in Chennai and later moved on to Kashmir. And, he realized that his dreams had come true.

Neighbours and other local residents say that Italy Nath is more enlightened about Hindu philosophy than them. Hence he is lovingly called with names like Itali Nath, Italian Nath and Italian Baba.

"Italian Nath ji came her from Chenani about 28-29 years back. His behaviour with people is very good. His standard of living is very high. I meet him whenever I go to temple and I always feel like sitting with him and talking about various things because he is very knowledgeable. He knows more about our religion than most of us. He told me when he first put his feet on this land on his tour from Italy, it felt him as if he always belonged to this land," said Pawan Gupta, a local resident.

Ajay Pratap, another local was of the view it is Hindu's privilege that a Catholic Christian is looking after a temple, radiating communal amity in words and deeds.

"I know about Baba Italian Nath for past 28 years, when he came here. The most joyful thing is that even being a foreigner he accepted our religion. He promotes brotherhood. He has the capacity to take along the people of all castes and creeds and that is admirable. He always gives the preaching of brotherhood and national integration," said Ajay Pratap, another local resident.

Italy Nath's father Franco, who is an engineer by profession, and his mother on their visit to India were immensely delighted to learn about their son's commitment to theology and social work. By Rajesh Vidhyarthi

Hindu celebration in Utah

Hindu celebration: Blessings to share (with multimedia)
Temple's fifth anniversary brings traditions of Hinduism and India to Utah
By Jessica Ravitz

SOUTH JORDAN - The wonder in her eyes, the calm with which she accepted ceremonial blessings, showed that Asha Huntsman, 2, felt an immediate connection.

Adopted from India and brought home to Utah early last year by Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. and his wife, Mary Kaye, little Asha seemed to relish the colorful celebration and crowds that surrounded her at South Jordan's Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple. She, her parents and most of her siblings came to the temple for the first time last week to commemorate its fifth anniversary.
"She kept reaching out for the Indian women," Mary Kaye Huntsman marveled later. "There's something deeper that we can't understand. . . . We will come out here often."
Hindu Temple celebration

Hindu priests greeted Utah's first family with Sanskrit blessings, and those gathered around, in vibrant saris and other customary clothing, sprinkled their guests with holy water and flower petals as they walked inside to stand before golden shrines. The governor, his head wrapped - turban-style - in a traditional crown of royalty, stood with Asha in his arms as the priests presented Lord Ganesha, the elephant-faced deity who removes all obstacles, with offerings of food, incense and chants. Community leaders honored the family with sweets and auspicious markings on their foreheads and then guided them through the temple to its various gods and goddesses, including the ones for strength, learning and wealth, and its shrine for the nine celestial beings.

Outside, beneath blue skies, the governor helped unveil the temple's two new granite pillars before thanking the crowd of hundreds, a mere sampling of the nearly 5,000 Utahns with ties to India, for bringing the traditions of Hinduism and their native country to Utah.

"By doing so, you make us a better and stronger state," he said. "Thank you for honoring us, and we hope in return we're honoring you."

The Huntsmans enjoyed a traditional dance, performed for them, as firecrackers sounded in the background. Before heading off, the governor helped bless an ornate chariot, replete with statues and offerings, with a traditional coconut breaking - a symbolic releasing of the ego. Re-enacting an Indian festival, in which deities are taken out of the temple and brought to worshippers' homes, the community circled the grounds - the chariot in tow - in a procession rich with dances, costumes and songs.

Music blared from outdoor speakers as the crowd stopped for performances, along a decorated pathway, to honor India's various states. Their folk dances told stories, including one of a horned-demon being overtaken by Goddess Durga, and their costumes represented regions. The people chanted, clapped and cheered as they slowly circled the temple.

Little girls, bejeweled and dressed in their traditional finest, ran across the temple lawn and flew high on nearby swings. Women carried covered brass pots of milk and water, meant to bring good luck to families, Kusum Dhiman, of North Ogden, explained.

They feasted on vegetarian dishes, including curried chick peas, rice and lentil cakes and mango ice cream, as kids in costume prepared to take the outdoor stage. Most were dressed as gods and goddesses. There were twin toddlers dressed as Lord Rama, with prop bows and arrows slung over their backs. Shreya Harikumar, 5, of South

Jordan, blinked beneath heavy eye makeup as she haltingly recited her lines.
"I am Goddess Andal," she said, draped in green and golden accessories and with a cardboard lotus and parrot in hand. "I am wife of Lord Rangathana. I wrote thirupavai [poems] for my lord."

The adults applauded when they weren't taking video or photos. Seeing their children take pride in Indian culture and Hindu traditions was something to smile about.

India, a country that had been ruled for centuries by outsiders - including the Arab incursions of the eighth century and later the British - developed a people with an "ethos of not being able to celebrate their own heritage," said Indra Neelameggham, the temple administrator. Because of this, festivals took on special significance, offering excuses to dress up, decorate and perform.
Back in India, Sampath Prahalad, a pediatric rheumatologist of Sandy, said playing a central role in festivals wasn't easy for everyone. It was more competitive, and political connections came into play. But in Utah, on land where snow-capped mountains loom in the background, the Indian and Hindu community is for all people.

"Here, everyone has a chance to participate," he said.
And that includes the governor's daughter.

Taj Mahal - It is time to tell the truth.

Taj Mahal - It is time to tell the truth.

There are many legends about the Taj Mahal. But one sentence is common in all of them. “For the construction, 20,000 men worked for 22 years.” This is well known throughout the world. The simple question is – where do these figures come from?

These figures come from a book Travels in India by J B Tavernier, a French jewel merchant. He was a great adventurer who made six voyages to India in the days of Shivaji (1638 to 1668). Tavernier says,” I witnessed the commencement and completion of this monument (Taj Mahal) on which 20,000 men worked incessantly for 22 years.”

Tavernier’s book was first published in French in 1675. In those days, it was a great adventure for a single man to travel over such a long distance, face many difficulties, deal with peoples of many cultures and languages, adjust to their customs and traditions, and come home safely – that in itself was incredible. In addition Tavernier carried out a trade in precious stones like diamonds. He completed such voyages, not once but six times. His book was therefore a great sensation at that time. It was naturally translated into English and during 1677 to 1811; nine editions of the English translation were published, whereas during the same period twenty-two editions of the French book were printed.

In 1889 Dr Ball translated the original French book into English, corrected some mistakes in earlier translation and provided extensive footnotes. He also studied Tavernier’s movements thoroughly and provided details of his six voyages. From this it is clear that Tavernier came to Agra only twice – in the winter of 1640-41 and in 1665. This raises another interesting question.

Historians say that Mumtaz, wife of Shahjahan died in 1631 and the construction of Taj Mahal started immediately. But if that is the case Tavernier could not have seen the commencement of Taj Mahal, as he came to Agra nearly 10 years later.
Aurangzeb had imprisoned his father Shahjahan in the Red Fort of Agra since 1658 and usurped power. No historian claims that Aurangzeb completed Taj Mahal. So, Tavernier could not have seen the completion of Taj Mahal either. And that being the case his statement that 20,000 men worked on it incessantly is meaningless.
Why have Historians kept this truth from us for the last 117 years? The reason is simple. It strikes at the heart of the legend.

Badshahnama – what does it say?
British Historians have proclaimed that in India, Hindu Kings had no historical sense. Historical records were kept only by the Muslim rulers. Fair enough, then let us turn to Badshahnama which was written during the reign of Shahjahan. Asiatic Society of Bengal published the Persian text of Badshahnama in two parts, part I in 1867 and part II in 1868. The compilation was done by two Maulavis, under the superintendence of an English Major. The funny thing is that no one quotes Badshahnama to explain how Taj Mahal was built. Why?

Elliot and Dowson, two English gentlemen undertook the formidable task of writing history of India from the attack on Sindh by Mohammed bin Kasim in the 8th century to the fall of Marathas in the 19th century. A period covering some 1200 years. But it was written, based on chronicles of Muslim rulers only. Elliot and Dowson’s work was published in 8 volumes during 1867 to 1877. Volume 7 deals with the reigns of Shahjahan and Aurangzeb. And yet in the entire volume we do not find the word ‘Taj Mahal.’ The authors should have said, “Though we have presented history of Shahjahan based on his official chronicle Badshahnama, we did not find any reference to Taj Mahal in it.” They did no such thing. And Historians have kept even this information from us for the last 130 years.

In 1896 Khan Bahaddur Syed Muhammad Latif wrote a book entitled Agra Historical and Descriptive. He refers to Badshahnama many times but does not quote specific page numbers. On page 105 he says, “ – The site selected for the mausoleum was originally a palace of Raja Mansingh but it was now the property of his grandson Raja Jaisingh.” Many authors have referred to Latif in their bibliography but have not cared to see what he has said. This truth was also hidden away from us by our Historians.

In 1905 H R Nevill, ICS, compiled Agra District Gazetteer. In it he changed the words ‘Raja Mansingh’s Palace’ to ‘Raja Mansingh’s piece of land’. Ever since all historians have followed suit and repeated ‘ Shahjahan purchased Raja Mansingh’s piece of land, at that time in the possession of his grandson Raja Jaisingh.’ This deception has been going on for more than a century.

One may ask, “Why would an English officer be interested in playing such a mischief?” Well if we look at the events of those times the reason is clear cut.

1901 Viceroy Lord Curzon separated some districts from Punjab to create a
Muslim majority North West Frontier Province. Hindus became an insignificant minority in this province and that marked the beginning of their misfortune.
1903 Curzon declared his intention to partition Bengal to create a Muslim majority province of East Bengal
1905 Curzon resigned but put into effect the partition of Bengal
1906 A Muslim delegation led by Agakhan called upon new Viceroy Lord Minto. Muslims pleaded that in any political reforms they should be treated separately and favourably. This move was obviously engineered by the British rulers.
December – Muslim League was started in Dacca.
1909 In the Morley - Minto reforms Muslims were granted separate electorates.

We should also remember that during 1873 and 1914, some English officers had translated into English the Persian texts of Babur-nama. Humayun-nama,
Akbar-nama, Ain-e-Akbari and Tazuk - i - Jehangiri, but NOT Badshahnama.

Judging from above events it is obvious why Mr Nevill played the mischief when compiling Agra District Gazetteer in 1905.

It is astonishing that though Maulavi Ahmad (History of Taj 1905) and Sir Jadunath Sarkar (Anecdotes of Aurangzeb, 1912) repeat that Raja Mansingh’s piece of land was purchased by Shahjahan, they also provide a reference - Badshahnama,
Volume I page 403. Strange as it may sound, no one had bothered to see what is written on that page.

In 1964 Mr P N Oak of New Delhi started having his doubts about Taj Mahal. He put forward an argument that it was originally a Hindu Palace. Oak had to cross swords with many historians. One of his opponents was a Kashmiri Pandit. Eventually they went to Government of India Archives. At the suggestion of the Librarian there the Pandit started to read Badshahnama, soon he came to Volume I page 403. One line read – va pesh azin manzil-e-Raja Mansingh bood, vadari vakt ba Raja Jaisingh. He confessed that Shahjahan took over Raja Mansingh’s palace for burial of Mumtaz. We owe so much to this honest opponent of Mr Oak. He gave word by word translation of pages 402 and 403 to Mr Oak who promptly published it in his book Taj Mahal is a Hindu Palace (1968). However, Mr Oak never stated that the translation was NOT his. It was done for him by a Persian expert. That made life of his opponents easy. They said, “Mr Oak’s translation is wrong.”

I obtained Oak’s book in London in 1977. I made a study for one year. First of all I read all the references generally quoted by Historians and writers. That was made possible by my being in England. Mr Oak did not have that facility. All the references led to the same conclusion that Taj Mahal is a Hindu Palace and it was NOT built by Shahjahan. My booklet entitled – Taj Mahal : Simple Analysis of a Great Deception was published in 1986. In 1981 while going through some references I started suspecting that the British knew the true nature of Taj Mahal for a long time but had deliberately suppressed the truth. Eventually my research was published in 10 parts in the Quarterly Itihas Patrika of Thane (India). I collected all the information available on Taj Mahal over the 200 year period from 1784 to 1984, and shown how the British suppressed vital pieces of evidence or twisted the truth. My research continued and was published in 1996 under the title – Taj Mahal and the Great British Conspiracy

Taj legend exposed in England in 1980
Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is a reputable Institution in London. In1980, in their monthly Journal, they published two letters challenging the validity of usual Taj Legend. One was by Mr Oak, the other by me. No one has refuted our arguments. Mr Oak refers to Badshahnama, Volume I page 403. What have I disclosed in my letter?

What was Agra City like before Shahjahan came to power? That is the question dodged by all Historians. In the 17th century, the Dutch like the English were trying to trade in India. They had a Factory (trading post) in Agra. Fransisco Pelsaert, was their Senior Factor (Merchant) at Agra from 1620 to 1627. In 1626 he prepared a commercial report for his directors in Holland. By strange coincidence, he describes Agra City at that time. He says, “The city is narrow and long, because all the rich and influential people have built their palaces on the river bank and this stretches for
10 ½ miles. I will mention some of the well known ones. Starting from the North there is the palace of Bahadur Khan, Raja Bhoj, ……. Then comes the Red Fort.
(Pelsaert then describes the Fort) beyond it is Nakhas – a great market, then follow the palaces of great Lords – Mirza Abdulla, Aga Naur …… Mahabat Khan, Late Raja Mansingh, Raja Madho Singh.”

English translation of this report was available since 1925. And yet no Historian refers to it. Why? The reason is simple. In 1626 Pelsaert has said that 10 ½ mile stretch of the river-bank was full of palaces, Late Raja Mansingh’s Palace being the last but one. Badshahnama says that Shahjahan took over this palace for burying his wife Mumtaz. Thus what we call Taj Mahal today is nothing but Late Raja Mansingh’s Palace. That is the truth which Historians have kept away from us.
My efforts had one effect. In 1982 Archaeological Survey of India, published a booklet entitled – Taj Museum. Though the authors repeat the usual legend they say, “ Mumtaz died in Burhanpur and was buried there. Six months later Shahjahan exhumed her body and sent her coffin to Agra, on that site until then stood Late Raja Mansingh’s Palace…… “
Today that palace is called Taj Mahal. Nothing could be simpler. What building work is needed for burying a corpse in a Palace?

Kashmiri Pandits join protest over Amarnath land row

By IANS,

New Delhi : About 500 Kashmiri Hindus, settled in the national capital, Sunday took to the streets and burnt effigies of a few political leaders against what they called "communalisation and politicisation of the Hindu shrine Amarnath".

Youths, who had drawn red lines on their forehead, blocked a road near Jantar Mantar, close to the city business hub Connaught Place, for over an hour.

They held placards reading, in red colour, "Kashmiri Pandits still alive... U dare not do that", "Ethnic cleansing of Hindus... Genocide.. Exodus.. Now the revocation of land transfer!!!" and "Don't ignore our silence".

They burnt the effigies of former deputy chief minister Muzaffar Baig and militant-turned-politician Yasin Malik.

A minor clash took place between Kashmiri Pandits and the police when they set fire to the effigies of Mahbooba Mufti, People's Democratic Party (PDP) president, and another symbolising the Jammu and Kashmir government.

The protesters accused the political leaders of communalisation and politicisation of the sacred Amarnath shrine.

"The ongoing crisis in the Valley is a well-crafted exercise by the separatists and some `anti-national' forces. It comes at a time when the Amarnath pilgrimage was in progress and the Jammu and Kashmir elections are round the corner," said Amal Magazine, a coordinator with Roots In Kashmir, a group that organised the protest.

Ajay Raj Kaul, another activist, termed Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra's decision to ask the state government to retain the land allotted tyo the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) as "immature".

"The land transfer is justified for the benefit of locals and as well the pilgrims. Over six hundred Hindu temples and shrines have been desecrated and destroyed as a part of a systematic plan of cleansing the Valley of any traces of its glorious Hindu past," said Kaul.

He also criticised the PDP that withdrew from the Ghulam Nabi Azad-led coalition government Saturday.

"They are at the forefront of this mayhem, fuelling the anti-Hindu campaign in the Valley," he added.

Kashmiri Pandits warned the government of a possible backlash on Amarnath shrine issue.

"This should be treated as a warning to the government that there will be a severe backlash and mayhem of the same magnitude as is being seen on the streets of Srinagar if the land transfer is reversed," said Pooja Shali, a female activist.

The Jammu and Kashmir government Sunday said it will retain the forest land allotted to the SASB.

The move came a day after the PDP left the government in crisis by pulling out of the Congress-led coalition amid differences over the allotment of the forest land in north Kashmir's Baltal area.

The Kashmir Valley has witnessed violent protests in the past week, after the state government March 5 allotted 40 hectares of forest land to the SASB, which till now managed the annual pilgrimage to the Hindu cave shrine in south Kashmir.

The Jammu and Kashmir cabinet March 5, 2008 allotted the 40 hectares of forest land in north Kashmir Baltal base camp area of the Amarnath Yatra to the SASB headed by the state governor for facilities for the pilgrims.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has always been synonymous with temples. It boasts of some of the most popular temple towns - Kancheepuram, Madurai and Tanjavur. Built centuries ago, these temples are a visual treat for lovers of architecture and history.

However, not everyone visits these temples with an intention to appreciate their beauty or to worship. They have now become soft targets for idol thieves. In the last one month, there have been at least three cases of idol thefts, the latest being Thursday, where a wooden elephant was found being smuggled to France.

The exquisitely carved Natarajas, Alwars and Murugans, crafted prior to 12th century have been stolen from these poorly guarded temples and make their way to many foreign countries.

Westerners pay exorbitant amounts for these idols. The idol wing of the crime branch CID, a special branch dedicated to track idol theft cases in the state, has seized 16 antique idols from different parts of the state this year.

Officials from the idol wing say that there are idol thieves active in every district of Tamil Nadu, constantly targeting temples in Tanjavur and Madurai belonging to the Chola period, temples in Kancheepuram and Vellore belonging to the the Pallava period and temples in Tirunelveli belonging to the Pandian period.

"These gangs constantly roam around the districts and target temples which don't have adequate security. When they strike at a temple, they only pick up the expensive idols. In many cases, they kill the security guard at the temple," an idol wing official said.

Once the burglars pick up idols, they hand them over to middlemen. "There are middlemen involved in the smuggling of idols. The burglars hand over the idols to first level middlemen who are mainly located in Karaikudi, Madurai and Chennai. Karaikudi is the main market for stolen idols. The middlemen collect the idols and get in touch with their other contacts. They provide the photograph of the idol to the second-level middlemen to assess the quality and value of the idol. The third-level middlemen later buy them and either send them outside the country or to cities like Mumbai and Delhi," the official added.

These panchaloha idols, the price of which even the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) cannot ascertain, are sold to the first-level middlemen for as less as 10,000 to 15,000. "The first level middlemen sell this off for around Rs 1 lakh and the second level middlemen, for a price between Rs 5-10 lakh for the idol. In the international market, these idols are sold for a price between Rs 50 lakh and Rs 1 crore," the official added.

The value of the idol is calculated as per its antiquity, size and weight. "There is a demand in the international market for 12th century idols. So the idol thieves concentrate more on areas like Tanjavur, Tiruvarur, Madurai and Kancheepuram," the official said.

Any transaction of artifacts that are more than 100 years old need permission from the government. “It is very easy to send the antiques out from India. The container services do not evaluate the age of the artifacts sent through them. The consignee records them as new artefact and presents photos of new artifacts. The consignment is then certified as non-antique, The customs officials also rely on this statement,” another official said.

Hindu religious sites in Pakistan have been targeted by looters: historian
June 27th, 2008 - 4:18 pm ICT by ANI - Email This Post Email This Post

Lahore , June 27 (ANI): Pakistan art historian Prof Dr. Ejaz Anwar has said that Hindu religious sites in Pakistan have always been the target of looters throughout history.

The surviving sculpture at the Katas Raj temple which depicted Hindu deities and seemed quite old is also in a serious threat of being stolen as the site provides an ideal ground for smugglers to work at, he told the Daily Times.

The statue was carved in the same red sand stone the whole Ramachandra Temple was constructed with.

He said the sculpture might have survived so long as it was present in a corner and could have escaped relic thieves eyes.

He urged the authorities to protect the sculpture and save it from being stolen.

The sculpture is precious and should be preserved as a heritage. It is a great asset for archaeologists. (ANI)

Only one Hindu relic left at Katas Raj temple

* Temple pundit fears smugglers have eye on last surviving relic

By Afnan Khan

LAHORE: The ancient Hindu temple at Katas Raj, some 40 kilometres from Chakwal, has been robbed of all its relics, save for a stone carving depicting a god and a goddess, who are sitting, and two female slaves standing on either side.

The sculpture, which has been defaced and marred by the ravages of time, is part of a wall in the right balcony of Ramachandra Temple, also known as the Temple of Snakes.

Pundit Javed Akram Kumar, who is also chief of the Katas Raj Parbandh Committee, told Daily Times on Thursday that the statue showed Lord Shiva and his wife, the goddess Satti, sharing a moment of love with two servants standing beside them.

He said Lord Shiva is one of the three main Hindu gods, the other two being Brahma and Vishnu. The three together are called ‘Trimurti’ and complete the cycle of life. Brahma is the creator, Vishnu the maintainer or preserver and Shiva the destroyer or transformer. Shiva is also known for his strong love for his wife, Kumar said, adding that their love was the reason for the creation of the Katas Raj Temple.

Kumar said Shiva cried so bitterly on Satti’s death that his tears filled two ponds, one of them at Pushkara in Ajmer, India, and the other one at Ketaksha (now Katas Raj). Ketaksha means ‘raining eyes’ in Sanskrit.

Kumar accused the Punjab Archaeology Department (PAD) for lack of interest and not providing the temple enough security. He said the temple had been a continuous victim to smugglers of ancient sculptures. He said the surviving statue was priceless and was also in threat of being stolen.

Sculpture in threat: “The smugglers are powerful people, equipped with all kinds of modern tools, including stone cutters, diggers and metal detectors. They have already stolen all stone and wooden artefacts from the temple. Now they have their eyes on this sculpture, which is evident by the fact that it has been chipped from all sides. I will not be surprised if it is plucked out soon,” he said.

Kumar said that the temple could have been a major tourist attraction, if the government had paid attention to it and advertised it. He said the temple was one of the most ancient sites in the country. He said the Katas valley had been famous for its beauty and centuries ago, there used to be a Sanskrit University in the valley which had produced many eminent scientists, including Alberuni, who had written his book ‘Kitab Al Hind’ at the university.

Kumar added that there had been a Buddhist stupa at the site, which had signs of an ancient civilisation that lived in the area centuries ago.

PAD Director General Shahbaz Khan told Daily Times that he had seen the temple and that his department was mapping the site. He said he would be able to comment on the history and details of the sculpture only after the mapping was complete. He said the site had already been looted and destroyed and had nothing to offer to smugglers and relic thieves.

Khan said that his department was running a project to preserve the site and that the project would be completed by next year. He admitted that the security at the site had been ‘loose’, but his department had recently put barbed wire around the temple. He added that the department was hiring staff who would take care of the temple.

“We will not increase the number of idols in the temple since we are not preserving the site as a Hindu temple on religious grounds, but as a historical and cultural monument,” the PAD DG said.

Worshipping in god's warehouse
Saroj Kumpar attends Sunday service at the Shri Durga Temple in Rockbank.

Temple of colour: Saroj Kumpar worships at the Shri Durga Temple in Rockbank.

* June 30, 2008

Inside a large shed Farah Farouque finds a little piece of India.

THE cold air blends this Melton afternoon with the intensity of sandalwood incense. It's a temple day and worshippers of the Hindu goddess Durga are on their knees. Music rings from a couple of small keyboards; there is a swirl of pink, red and green from the women's attire. As the faithful chant their mantras, new worshippers enter the shed-like space and pull the lever of a temple bell suspended high from a corrugated iron ceiling. "We are asking the god for permission to enter her house," whispers a worshipper.

It's an ancient rite that has come to Rockbank, a still-developing outpost of the Shire of Melton. There are no tall spires indented with Hindu deities at this site, surrounded by green fields, as a traditional Hindu place of worship. Although plans have been drawn up and some foundations laid, the usable space is still strictly a warehouse. But enter the shed structure, and you'll be surprised by a deeply Hindu aesthetic.

The gods are everywhere.

Pranav Garjjar, a first-time worshipper, yesterday made the hour-long pilgrimage from Richmond to join the throng. When he arrived, the newly settled web programmer from Gujarat was struck by how the scene inside the makeshift temple reminded him of India. "It's absolutely amazing," he said, inspecting an elevated podium dressed in royal red and bearing images of a string of popular Hindu deities. A full retinue was present and accounted for: the monkey-god Hanuman, Shiva the giver of life, the elephant-god Ganesh.

After the formal prayer had finished, Mr Garjjar, 24, remained drawn to this glimpse of the subcontinent in the suburbs. "It doesn't really feel like I'm in Australia … I don't feel that much isolated," he said.

Subash Agnihotri, who runs an Indian restaurant, says worshipping wasn't always as authentic an experience. A long-time stalwart of the temple, he remembers more than 20 years back when families from India would meet and worship at each other's homes. "Now, temples are open seven days," he says. "The hours are like 7-Eleven."

The temple's priest, Prem Bhatt, has been presiding over his growing congregation in the western suburbs for some six years. He arrived on a 428 visa: a special category of temporary settler status for religious folk. Mr Bhatt's days are full of prayer and counsel - and more mundane tasks, such as making sure the podium of deities is kept in pristine condition after daily services. On major festival days - there are a dozen each year - sometimes the unprepossessing venue hosts up to 10,000 people, worshippers say. "They've come from as far as Ballarat," says Mr Agnihotri.

With the growing influx of Indian-origin migrants, tracing their heritage from Indian communities not just from the subcontinent, but from Malaysia, Fiji and east Africa, the demand for religious services has increased. Melbourne is now host to at least five temples, ranging from Hare Krishna to more traditional manifestations. Reflecting the multi-stranded nature of the Hindu faith, they tend to differ in the emphasis they place on certain deities.

The deity they call the "mother-god" is the focus at Rockbank. After each weekend's prayer session the worshippers gather outside for a vegetarian meal as an expression of unity.

Raj Dudeja, editor of the Indian Voice newspaper, says the branches of Hinduism co-exist peacefully in Melbourne. "Hindus are religious but not very religious in the sense they are not fanatics," he says.

At Rockbank, however, architectural ambitions have led to passionate debates about the developments. Hanging pride of place in the warehouse are plans for massive expansion of the site, which include a temple with a high spire and an education and cultural centre. However, the manner of the expansion is now subject of a court dispute between a few members of the congregation.

For most who attended yesterday, however, it was a day of worship, ambience merely an added extra.

Melbourne's fastest-growing religion

HINDUISM is Melbourne's fastest growing religion. A recent analysis of the 2006 census prepared by researcher Philip Hughes confirmed the city's fastest growing faith was Hinduism - up 157% over the decade to 41,000 adherents.

Hinduism's growth - largely from the recruitment boom in Indian migrants - is reflected nationally.

With an increase in numbers, architectural ambitions have also grown. Apart from a grand temple in Carrum Downs, there are also temples off Mountain Highway, The Basin, a complex in Sunshine and even a former hall turned temple in Halley Avenue, Camberwell.

Sinhalese Buddhist politicians and Hindu gods

This column does not get involved in matters spiritual or theological but the headline two Sundays ago in a weekend paper under the double decked headline: "Ranil holds two-day pooja in India worshipping Hindu gods," which so far had gone uncommented, we thought cried out for a comment.

The article was by a former journalist guru of ours in the mid '60s - H.L.D Mahindapala with whom we still maintain very cordial relations despite his abode being now in Melbourne. Our comments are not intended to defend or criticise Ranil Wickremesinghe who is well able to defend himself. Our intention is to go into the issue of the worship of Hindu gods by Sinhala Buddhist politicians.

The thrust of the argument in the article - despite the many pot shots taken at Wickremesinghe - is that the UNP Leader 'had prayed at the Lord Krishna temple at Guruyayur (South India) and 'had closed-door sessions for two days with the well known astrologer Parappanangadi Unnikrishnan Panicker...' for an 'Ashtamangalya Prasnam' (astrological pooja for knowing what is in store in the coming days).

We will not go into the issue of whether the worship of gods is acceptable or not in Theravada Buddhism or the variety of Buddhism now being practised by Sri Lankan Buddhists, be it Mahayana, Tantric or any other form. Being mere journalists, whom the Defence Ministry pundits recently said are not even competent to comment on military strategies or armament purchases - corrupt or not - we will not venture into Buddhist metaphysics or Hindu theology.

But we are competent to say quite confidently that Sri Lankan Buddhist politicians and in fact the vast majority visit Hindu kovils, worship Hindu gods and make solemn vows in times of distress and also consult Hindu astrologers.

President Rajapakse himself

It was not very poya moons ago that President Mahinda Percy Rajapakse on a visit to India also visited and prayed at the holy shrine in South India. Readers will remember the incident if they recall reports about some unrest caused among devotees of the temple following allegations made that the Sri Lankan President's entourage that entered the temple included a Christian - some one very near and dear to the President. It is a rule of the temple not to permit non-Hindus to worship there. It appears that Buddhists are pass‚. The incident has been forgotten as most such incidents do.

Mahinda Rajapakse is from the Medamulane village in the Deiyange Rate - god Kataragama's country - and would undoubtedly be a devotee of the god. History has it that the legendary King Dutu Gemunu - whom many politicians want to be considered as his reincarnation - had worshipped at the Kataragama shrine before he commenced his march from the south to storm the forts of King Elara at Anuradhapura.

Kataragama

Buddhists outnumber the Hindus and adherents of other religions worshipping at Kataragama. When the Sinhala Only Act was moved many Sinhala Buddhist politicians journeyed to Kataragama to seek the god's assistance for the successful implementation of the act. Cynics say that the god in his holiest of holies had whispered to the Sinhala Only supplicants: But I am a Tamil god! And does anyone say that Mahinda Rajapakse does not have astrological advisors telling him what the future holds?

President Premadasa

Mahinda Rajapakse appears to be following in the footsteps of President Ranasinghe Premadasa who worshipped every conceivable god of every faith that he came to know of. A dear departed friend at my club, a punter, described Premadasa as one 'Who placed - win or place bets - on all the horses on the betting card.'

By this he did not mean any disrespect to gods of any religious pantheon. My friend's gods were the horses and jockeys in the British and European courses and his rice and curry as well as his whisky and soda or his arrack with water in leaner times depended on his gods out there.

There are similarities between Rajapakse and Premadasa such as TV crews and press cameras covering every angle of Presidential of Presidential devotion probably for historical record and of course, public consumption. Ranil Wickremesinghe, however plays it different. He goes to temples and kovils sans publicity units as he has done recently in South India. Little wonder that the gods and the public are not much enthused about him.

All the gods in Premadasa's pantheons could not help him The Sun god, Suriya Theivam blew him up to bits at Armour Street junction. But such acts do not deter devotees and Buddhists retain faith in Hindu gods.

Before Premadasa and Rajapakse there were the Senanayakes and Bandaranaikes. Senanayakes were traditional Sinhalese Buddhists and worshipped at temples and kovils. We covered Dudley Senanayake placing the pinnacle (Kotha) on the Kirivehera for The Observer shortly before his disastrous rout in 1970.

Bandaranaike, scion of the leading Protestant Christian family, became a Buddhist and Christians accused him of selling out his faith for political power. He worshipped at Buddhist temples and Buddhist monks, Buddhism being one of the props of his celebrated 1956 victory. He however did not make a show of worshipping at Hindu temples.

His wife Sirima Bandaranaike was a staunch Buddhist and worshipped Hindu gods. During the latter part of her life she was a well known devotee of Sai Baba who is described as an avatar of many Hindu gods.

Sai Baba

During her time as well as that of the UNP under J.R. Jayewardene and Premadasa, Sai Baba attracted the Sri Lankan powers that were, by the hundreds if not thousands. Presidents, presidential advisors, cabinet ministers, army generals and other top brass in the services, leading public servants, press barons and baronesses and of courses arms dealers and racketeers, all flocked to Puttaparthi where Sai Baba held Bajans.

An Indian journalist told me that he (Sai Baba) was far more popular in Sri Lanka than in his native India. Since everybody who was somebody in the Lankan political firmament - government and opposition - were fanatical devotees, it made me wonder to what extent he could or was influencing government policy and decisions.

As an editor of an independent newspaper we physically felt the power of Sai Baba. When widespread allegations of misconduct and misdemeanours of him appeared on the internet, I was firmly told: 'Not one word. That's how power of gods prevails over power of puny newspapermen and freedom of the press!'

The don who challenged the gods

This article would have a gaping hole in it if no reference is made to one person who dared to take on the gods openly in the 1970s and even the '80s: Prof. Carlo Fonseka. He took on the biggest of them all, god Kataragama. He made his laboratory attendant walk burning embers barefooted before a howling mob of devotees to prove that the secret fire walking at Kataragama and elsewhere was nothing spiritual.

'It is the thickness of the sole and not the soul,' he argued. He strung up a youth with hooks passing through his skin on ropes suspended on a ceiling and made him eat a piece of meat which was considered sacrilegious and quaff a glass of arrack shouting: Vidyawata Jayawewa - Victory to Science.

But time brings about change and now a mellowed Prof. Fonseka leaves the Kataragama god in peace. Instead he has declared war on the Greek god Bacchus - the God of Wine and under the Drugs and Alcohol Abuse Act he is thwarting young future adherents of Bacchus from quaffing a glass of the cup that cheers at big matches and even little brats puffing off their fathers' cigarette butts inside toilets.

Communal violence rocks Margao
BY HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, JUNE 27 – Communal violence erupted in the commercial capital and the communally-sensitive Rumdamol Housing Board on Friday, as the police used batons to quell a mob from going on a rampage, damaging some shops in the new market and Gandhi market areas and forcing shopkeepers to down shutters.
The Gandhi market bore the brunt of the attackers, with the mob damaging goods in the vegetable, fruits and masala stalls. A couple of shops in the New market area and two hotels were stoned by the protestors. A vehicle parked on the station road was also damaged.
The violence was apparently sparked off by an altercation between two groups in the Housing Board area near the Maruti Temple around noon over an eve-teasing incident.
The fracas is believed to have been precipitated by an argument between Bajrang Dal leader Mantesh Ragi and another group comprising Rafiq, Damu and Panch member, Nissar Kilegar, when the former questioned them over the eve teasing incident.
Allegedly coming at the receiving end of Mantesh, Nissar and his supporters later marched to the house of Ragi and damaged his shop and house.
Anticipating retaliation from the majority community, heavy police reinforcements from South Goa, besides platoons of the India Reserve Battalion were deployed in the Housing Board since noon.
The police led by Deputy Superintendent of Police, Umesh Gaonkar told a mob, which gathered on the road after the Friday prayers at around 2.15 pm, to disperse and help maintain peace and calm the area.
In the meantime, as news about the attack on the shop and house of Mantesh Ragi spread, members of the majority community gathered at the newly-built temple in the Housing board. The police called the two parties for discussions, but the groups refused to heed the police appeal..
The situation grew grim when miscreants set a motorcycle on fire in the Housing Board and damaged three other vehicles.
Around, the same time, members of the majority community rushed to Margao to attend a meeting convened a the Pimpalkatta to chalk out the future course of action. Seething with anger over the attack on Ragi’s house, the agitated crowd retaliated with some persons going on a rampage after a fiery speech by Jayesh Naik to defend themselves against pro-Pakistan and anti-national elements.
Completely taken by surprise over the turn of events at Pimpalkatta – with the mob stoning business premises and attacking the Gandhi market — the police recouped themselves quickly — after being accused of being mere spectators — with more reinforcements.
When Jayesh addressed the crowd for the second time at Pimpalkatta, with a call to all Goans, including Hindus and Christians to unite and fight the anti-national elements, the police cordoned off the area, before ordering a baton charge .
Jayesh Naik, Sushant Manerkar, Nikhil Borkar and Suhas Naik, who were injured in the baton icharge were rushed to Hospicio hospital.
Agitated BJP members marched to the Margao police headquaters and confronted Supertindent (South) Shekhar Prabhudessai for the “unwarranted and brutal” police action.
They also questioned the SP for the police silence in not arrested the accused named in the attack on Ragi’s house and shop at the Housing Board.
An agitated crowd waiting out the police headquarters stoned a bus parked at the old bus stand. The crowd later assembled at the Hospicio Hospital, where Rashtriya Swayamsevak (RSS ) chief Subhash Velingkar and Bajrang Dal leader Vinayak Chari and others came to inquire the condition of the injured activists.
Meanwhile, District Collector G P Naik told Herald that the police have arrested 15 persons in connection with both incidents. He said Rumdamol Panch Nissar Kilekgar and another person were arrested in connection with the Housing Board incident, while the remaining accused were nabbed in the Margao violence.

BA protests dam project endangering Hindu temple

* MPA claims construction of dam violation of another WB-funded project
* BA moves resolution to reinstate sacked Bugti employees at oil and gas companies

By Malik Siraj Akbar

QUETTA: The Balochistan Assembly (BA) on Saturday unanimously demanded the federal government, through a parliamentary resolution, cancel construction plans for a dam on Hangol River in order to avoid damage to a historical Hindu temple.

Balochistan Minister for Irrigation and Power Sardar Muhammad Aslam Bizenjo along with several other provincial ministers moved a joint resolution on the floor of the BA against construction of the dam. The ministers told the House that the federal government was planning to construct a dam on Hangol River which would pass close to the Makran Coastal Highway.

The location of the dam concurs with the historical Hinglaj Mata temple, a shrine visited by tens of thousands of local and foreign Hindus annually. The temple is also the venue for a grand annual religious festival held every April.

The resolution said that if the government continued with the project, the temple was likely to be inundated with water and all roads leading to it getting completely closed. "We request the government to respect the sentiments of our fellow Hindu brothers. If the temple is damaged, Pakistan's image on the global front would be tarnished and the Hindus living all across the world would be ‘hurt’ over our inability to protect our religious minorities. We therefore request the government to construct the dam elsewhere to ensure the protection of the Hinglaj Mata temple," demanded the resolution.

While the whole House supported the resolution, it was ironically a parliamentarian from the Hindu community who insisted that the government should continue with the project “without making religion a hurdle on the path to socio-economic development”. Basant Lal Gulshan told the House that it was unreasonable to cancel the entire project on the mere basis of the threats it posed to the temple. The government should instead find an alternative path to carry on the project, ensuring the temple’s protection.

World Bank violation: Another parliamentarian from the area where the dam is proposed to be constructed told Daily Times that the Government of Pakistan was morally bound not to carry on the project because the World Bank (WB), assisting Pakistan with the construction of Hangol National Park in the same area, would provide Rs 250 million for the construction of the dam provided that the government ensure the protection of the environment there.

"The construction of a dam in the premises of Hangol National Park amounts to a violation of Pakistan’s commitment to the World Bank and the international community," he said.

The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), the department responsible for building the dam, was hence asked to either re-design the dam or move it to another location.

Reinstatement: The BA in another resolution ordered Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) to immediately reinstate 65 employees of various oil and gas companies, including Nawabzada Jamil Akbar Bugti, son of late Nawab Akbar Bugti, who had been fired from their jobs by the previous government on the basis of either being members of the Bugti tribe or having close links with the late Nawab Bugti. The top management of these companies were also directed to send a representative each to the BA by July 1 to clarify their position on the sacking of these workers.

A Remembrance :-

When the Gods smiled on India

There are times in each nation's life when the gods shower their
blessings on it. The right leaders are in place and they make the
right decisions. Everything seems to click and good luck favours its people. Such times came to this country 31 years ago this month.

Today when terrorism and violence racks the nation, when people are beginning to divide along communal and caste lines, when the economy is spluttering and when the future does not look too bright, it does the soul good to look back and remember that electric year which began with uncertainty and ended in triumph.

To start with, India had a charismatic and popular head of
government. Indira Gandhi had been in power for just five years but she was a self assured leader who knew exactly what had to be done and went about the task unerringly. Pakistani repression in the eastern part of that country was resulting in millions of refugees pouring into India. The country could no longer bear the burden of such a large influx of refugees. For one last time Indira had decided to try the diplomatic option. She made a trip to many countries in Europe and the United States. Everywhere she got a polite hearing. But what Nixon and Kissinger were saying about India behind her back is now obvious from the transcripts of the discussions in Beijing released recently. It was apparent to her very early that war was inevitable.

By a happy coincidence the right people were in place everywhere. Babu Jagjivan Ram was the shrewd and sagacious defence minister. And to complete the perfect team were the three service chiefs, each an outstanding professional. Under the wise leadership of General Sam Manekshaw inter-service cooperation was at its best.

The fact that Manekshaw was the army chief itself was very
fortuitous. Just a few years before, some of his jealous colleagues,
encouraged by then defence minister V K Krishna Menon, had tried to terminate his career by instituting an inquiry against him.
Fortunately for India, the Chinese war of 1962 intervened. His
opponents were vanquished. Sam was recalled and reinstated and later became army chief.

Sam often describes the time when he was called to a Cabinet meeting in May where the situation was being discussed. Practically every member of the Cabinet was for an immediate attack on East Pakistan. Sam listened quietly. Unlike 1962 he was not going to be rushed into an action half prepared. He would first get fully ready and strike at a time and place of his choosing. The prime minister and Cabinet yielded.

The services spent the next six months preparing for the inevitable. Shortfalls in equipment and personnel were made up. For a change the bureaucrats and servicemen worked hand in hand, thanks to Babuji at the top. The chiefs had direct and frequent access to the top and the prime minister, unlike latter days, consulted them frequently.

Like the army, the Indian Navy was also fortunate to have a dynamic leader like Admiral 'Charles' Nanda at its head. Nanda spent the six months enthusing the navy with the offensive spirit. The initial war plans made by the Western Naval Command were totally defensive and Nanda was deeply disappointed. So much so that at one stage he had thought of seeking the resignation of the Western Command C-in-C. It was under Nanda's guiding spirit that the navy made offensive plans. Nanda also brought a great deal of innovation to the plans.

The Soviets had just delivered eight Osa class missile boats to the
Indian Navy, each carrying four deadly Styx missiles. The boats had limited range and the Soviet tactics specified that the missile boats were to be deployed defensively within a short distance of the base. Furthermore, the missiles were specifically designed to attack ships at sea and not shore targets. Nanda threw the Soviet instructions out of the window. He wanted the boats to attack Karachi with their missiles. To overcome their short range he devised a method of towing the boats to within a short distance of enemy harbours.

The innovation paid off when on the night of December 4, 1971, the missile boats carried out their first attack on Karachi. Not only
were the missiles successfully launched on Karachi but in the bargain the boats also managed to sink two Pakistani warships and severely damage a third. To put the icing on the cake a second attack was launched a few days later. This attack successfully set on fire the oil tanks at Kiamari helping to bring the war to a swift end.

Of course, the attack on Karachi was not the Indian Navy's only
contribution. In the East the aircraft carrier Vikrant's aircraft
successfully attacked targets at Chittagong and Cox's Bazaar. With their routes of escape blocked more than 90,000 Pakistani soldiers were captured by Sam's land forces. But forgotten in the hype over the attack on Karachi was the navy's greatest contribution. Throughout the war the navy managed to keep the port of Mumbai open. Karachi and Chittagong were bottled up after the first day of war and no ships were allowed to enter or leave. But Mumbai remained open to all traffic throughout the two weeks.

India's and Indira's greatest hour came after the war. Having given
the country its greatest victory since Independence and presided over the birth of a new nation, Indira Gandhi was magnanimous. Other nations hold on to prisoners of war and captured territory for years and impose humiliating conditions on defeated nations. India returned both territory and men within three months. Many today blame her for being too lenient at Shimla.

One would have wished that the actors in this drama would have gone on to greater glory after 1971. But this was not to be. Indira Gandhi went on to sully her record by declaring the infamous Emergency in 1975 and later died a violent death at the hands of her bodyguards. Babuji split from the Congress and for a time was a minister in the Janata government. But he was not the same man again and died a forgotten man.

And what about the chiefs who gave India its glorious hour in the
sun? In 1805 when Lord Nelson gave England its famous victory over the French at Trafalgar, a grateful nation forgot all his
indiscretions with Lady Hamilton. They built for him a magnificent
monument at Trafalgar Square.

India on the other hand lived up to its reputation of being an
ungrateful nation. To this day they have not built a monument, either to commemorate the victory, nor to honour the men. Sam Manekshaw was made a Field Marshal but very soon went on from being the darling of the nation to practically an outcast. The man who saw Indira Gandhi practically every day before and during the war was never received by her again. Admiral Nanda too found disfavour with the government.

Today a huge statue of Krishna Menon, who had to resign in disgrace after the Chinese debacle, adorns a main street leading up to South Block in New Delhi. It is most unlikely that the nation will ever build a statue of Sam Manekshaw or Charles Nanda.

Never mind. They can take comfort in Cato the Elder's immortal
words: 'When I die I would rather have people say why there is no
monument to me than why there is.'

New temple for Hindu community in Canada

New temple for Hindu community
$5.6 million spent on Park Ex facility

Published: Saturday, June 21
Montreal's small but burgeoning Hindu community will open a $5.6-million temple in Park Extension today, more than doubling the size of the old one that was there.

"It shows we're proud and happy to keep our traditions, our religion and our culture," said Harish Patel, president of the charity that built the temple.

Named after the Hindu deity Ram, Ramji Temple is on Durocher St. near Jarry St. W. It can hold 500 people.

Font:****"The old temple was 60 by 50 square feet. This one is 150 by 80," Patel, who owns a nearby Lajeunesse St. motel, said before a visit to the temple this week.

Also on the premises is a small language school (French for adults, Hindi and Gujarati for youths who already know French).

Construction under local architect Gurdip S. Trehin began 21/2 years ago. Money was raised from Hindu faithful in Montreal, Toronto and New York, Patel said. The two-storey temple sits next to a Sikh temple, proof that the two faiths get along well in Quebec, said Trehin, who himself is Sikh.

Bouyed by rising numbers of immigrants from India, Hinduism is growing here and throughout Canada.

The 2006 federal census did not ask people their religion, but in 2001, when it did, 24,530 Quebecers identified themselves as Hindu, up 74 per cent from 1991.

Across Canada, adherents of Hinduism doubled from from 0.3 per cent of all faiths in 1981 to 0.6 per cent in 1991, and nearly doubled again to one per cent in 2001.

Two-thirds of Hindus in Canada live in Ontario, but French-speaking Quebec has also attracted people of that faith, thanks to rising numbers of immigrants from South Asia.

In Montreal, 71,000 people are immigrants from South Asia, including many Hindus from India. The number of South Asians here has grown by 23 per cent since 2001.

"The Hindu community has been here for over 35 years," said Patel, who has lived in Montreal since 1972 and whose children were born and raised here.

"But we've been expanding a lot since the early '90s. People sponsor family members from India to come here and others have had their children here." This morning's 9 a.m. opening ceremony is timed to the Hindu calendar - "kind of like a horoscope, to bring good luck," Patel said. "It's the perfect moment."

Jammu, June 25 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists staged a protest in Jammu today to voice their anguish over the separatists demand for cancellation of land allotted to the Amarnath Shrine Board.

The BJ P activists have called for a shutdown in the city on June 26.

The agitators said that any effort made to hinder the Amarnath pilgrimage would invoke reactions from the Hindus and they would come on the streets along with the Sikh community.

“If any attempt is made to stop the Amarnath Yatra then we will not sit back. We threaten the provincial government that we along with our Sikh fraternity will come on the streets of Jammu but we won’t tolerate any obstruction in the pilgrimage. We have announced a shutdown in Jammu tomorrow. Sikh and Hindu community along with political parties will support the shutdown and appeal the people in Jammu to support us by closing their shops,” said Vikram Chaudhry, president, BJP youth wing.

Authorities last week said nearly 100 acres of forestland in Kashmir was being transferred to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) to erect temporary structures for the pilgrims who annually trek to the Hindu cave shrine Amarnath, deep in the Himalayas.

Local Muslims have opposed the move and the state has been witnessing several protests in the past few days.

Kashmiri separatists had protested saying the fragile ecology of the mountainous region would be ruined by building “permanent” structures at base camps of the Amarnath pilgrimage.

During the two-month-long pilgrimage, thousands of devout Hindus trek to the cave, situated at an altitude of 3,800 meters (12,700 feet). (ANI)

Australia-wide boycott of “The Love Guru” by Hindus and other religious people announced

Australia-wide boycott of “The Love Guru” by Hindus and other religious people announced

Rajan Zed, acclaimed Hindu leader, has given an Australia-wide boycott call for Hollywood movie “The Love Guru” by Hindus and other religious people because it lampoons Hinduism and Hindu concepts and uses Hindu terms frivolously.

“The Love Guru” is reportedly scheduled to be released in Australia on July 10.
Zed, who launched campaign against this movie starting in March, urging other people of faith (besides Hindus) also to boycott the movie, said, “Today it is Hinduism, tomorrow Hollywood might attempt to denigrate another religion/denomination.”

The antics of Guru Pitka of “The Love Guru” are a mockery of the esteemed institution of guru, who is a highly revered spiritual teacher/master/preceptor in Hinduism and who helps remove the ignorance of the seeker and who leads one from darkness to light. The guru-sishya (teacher-disciple) relationship lies at the heart of traditional Hinduism. Guru is often allied with the divine. Guru bestows spiritual knowledge totally free from selfish objectives, Zed stressed.

On the other hand, guru in “The Love Guru” instigates a bar fight, repeatedly narrates penis jokes, mocks yoga (one of the six orthodox schools of Hindu philosophy), wears female jewelry, mocks the concept of third eye, makes disciples drink tea passed through his nose, orders alligator soup, induces elephant copulation in front of the crowd, introduces himself as “His Holiness”, lives in a lavish ashram staffed with scantily clad maids, and whose goal in life seems to appear on Oprah Winfrey show, Zed said.

When did Hindu gurus become available “for hire”? When and who started rating them? When did shishyas (disciples) started joining ashram for the sole purpose to make girls like them? Which Hindu ashram organizes fights of disciples with mops soaked in guru’s urine? Which guru urinates in the midst of disciples? Rajan Zed asked.

This is pure and blatant ridiculing and Paramount and its parent Viacom should immediately issue a general public apology for denigration of Hinduism and Hindu concepts, utter disregard of the protesters, backtracking on promise to pre-screen the movie for Rajan Zed and other Hindu leaders, making no efforts to have an open civilized dialogue with protesters to arrive at an mutually acceptable solution, Zed said.

A prominent Jewish Rabbi, Elizabeth W. Beyer of Nevada, has already called for boycott of “The Love Guru” because it “…lampoons Hinduism, mocks Ashram life and Hindu philosophy…”

Hindus are for free speech as much as anybody else if not more. But faith is something sacred and attempts at belittling it hurt the devotees. Filmmakers should be more sensitive while handling faith related subjects, as cinema is a very powerful medium, Zed argued.

Of course a small movie, which will be forgotten in few months, would not destroy the great tradition of Hinduism which has been around longer than any other established religion and has faced lot of onslaughts and came out stronger. But Hinduism is often misunderstood and wrongly portrayed outside India. Movies like this bring more confusion and create stereotypes in the minds of audience, many of whom may not have had any other exposure to its tenets, Zed stressed.

Humor is a part and parcel of Hindu society and our folk festivals, plays, stories, etc., are full of parody, satire, mimicry, buffoonery, etc. We are strong enough to take jokes. But there are certain convictions in every tradition, which are venerable and not meant to be mocked at, Zed argued.

People associated with the film claim that it has nothing to do with Hinduism and portrays “completely made up system of teachings”. But terms such as guru, ashram, yoga, karma, etc., --all clearly point to Hinduism. Some people who have vested interest in the movie are unsuccessfully trying to defend this apparent mockery and in the process creating more confusion, Zed said.

The broader aim of Australia-wide boycott against this movie is to protect the interests of various minorities and ethnicities and save them from future ridicule. Everyone is a minority in some place and in some sense and deserves to be respected. As fellow humans, is it not everybody’s duty to stand for the rights of minorities and speak for them when attempts are made at ridiculing them? Somebody has to make sacrifices so that others can live honorably, Rajan Zed stressed.

He said that what would have been a small public relations exercise blew out of proportion because of stubbornness of Paramount or incompetence of their public relations team or something else in their minds that we do not know. Backtracking on the promise of pre-screening for Rajan Zed and other Hindu leaders by Paramount was described by the diverse clergy as “un-Christian, un-Hindu, un-Buddhist, un-Jewish, etc., besides being unethical.”

Our doors are still open for Paramount/Viacom for dialogue, Zed said.

Rajan Zed further said that comedy should make everybody smile and should not come at the expense of ridiculing others’ faith and spreading misinformation. Hinduism is the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion followers and a rich philosophical thought and it should not be taken lightly. No faith, larger or smaller, should be ridiculed at.

Meanwhile, signature campaign launched by Hindu groups against “The Love Guru” has crossed the 6,100 mark.

“The Love Guru” (88 minutes), a comedy starring Mike Myers (of Austin Powers fame), opened Friday in USA and Canada will be released in different parts of the world in the near future. Viacom’s family of brands includes MTV, Paramount, DreamWorks, etc. Paramount Pictures Corporation is a global producer and distributor of filmed entertainment.
