Convicted Bali bombers challenge execution method

JAKARTA: Lawyers for three Islamic militants on death row for the 2002 Bali bombings asked Indonesia's Constitutional Court on Thursday to reconsider the method of their executions, saying firing squads were inhumane.

The convicts, Imam Samudra, Amrozi Nurhasyim and Ali Ghufron, would prefer death by lethal injection or beheading, Wirawan Adnan told a panel of judges as part of efforts to delay their deaths.

"Like other Indonesian citizens, our clients have constitutional rights, including that they not be tortured,'' said Muhammad Mahendradata, another lawyer, arguing that some convicts who face firing squads do not die immediately, causing unnecessary suffering.

The three men were found guilty in 2003 of planning and helping carry out the October 12 suicide bombings targeting two packed nightclubs on the resort island of Bali. Many of the 202 people who died were foreign tourists. They admitted to taking part in the attacks and, having exhausted the appeals process.
