Pandits demand grant of religious places in valley

Srinagar, Aug 5 (PTI): Reiterating its demand to hand over all religious places of Hindus to Pandits in the valley for restoration of law and order in Jammu and Kashmir, a pandit organisation today called for "isolating the elements bent upon dividing the state on communal and regional lines." "If the temples and shrines of the minority community of the valley are handed to the locals, by virtue of Kashmiri Pandits Temples and Shrine Bill (which is yet to be passed), the controversy will automatically come to an end," Kashmiri Pandit Sangarsh Samiti (KPSS) President, Sanjay Tikoo said in a statement here.

Tikoo said the dissolved assembly is responsible for the volatile situation as it did not pass the bill.

Referring to the ongoing agitation over the Amarnath land row, he said "the recent developments showed that sensitive issues are not properly addressed." The KPSS also sought a clarification from the administration as to why unscrupulous elements were allowed to come on the roads when curfew was in place.

The SASB Land transfer controversy has divided the state into two conflict zones -- Jammu province and Kashmir province -- on the basis of regionalism, he alleged. PTI
